Today (July 26) we were back in the same encampment where we were yesterday. This afternoon was focused on 11 teenage children aged 13-15. We drove from Mianyang to Beichuan in pouring rain.
As all of the paths and roads in the camp where we have been going are made of dirt, we were expecting what we we ended up experiencing: a lot of mud.
The team spent a lot of time teaching the trainees how to use therapeutic games in order to help children discharge the trauma that is held in their bodies. The children then played several games including monkey chases fish, "I've Got the Power, and the Parachute Game. These games activate children who then were helped to process the activation with their assigned trainee.
The young teens, after several hours of game playing and intervention with a therapist trainee reported decreased symptoms and visibly looked calmer and more present.
We finished at about 3:30 and none of us were prepared for what we would see next. We had been told that Beichuan CIty was about 5 kilometers from the camps and so we asked the bus driver to take us there. We had to walk quite a ways as traffic that is not reklated to re-construction is not allowed into the city. Most of us were given a ride in the back of a trailer hitched to a tractor. Once we made it up to the top of the hill the view stunned most of us into disbelief. It was like a giant had come along and stepped on some buildings, crushed some, and knocked some over. None of us had ever seen so much destruction in one place. I have sent several pictures by a separate email. I will send more tomorrow.
